Co-production Booklet

On the 30th January 2018 Blackburn with Darwen parents and carers and staff from Blackburn with Darwen Council and Health Services came together to take part in a co-production training session.

What is co-production?

Co-production is when service providers work well together with families and other providers to make decisions and come up with ideas to make services better for people locally.  To be successful everyone taking part needs to be involved right from the beginning, through to the end: planning, delivering and checking how well services are doing.

Children and young people with SEND, and their families, should be at the heart of any SEND co-production activities.

What was the training for?

This fun and upbeat session was designed to raise awareness of the Council’s and its partners' responsibility to involve families in developing services and important decision making.  It also gave the people attending lots of ideas on how families and services can work together do this best.

Everyone fed back that they had really enjoyed the day.  Staff said that they had learned such a lot about what coproduction is and what it means for their services. The parents and carers who attended were really keen to be involved in future co-production activities.

Geraldine Hills (the course founder, and herself a parent of a child with complex needs) said, ‘This was the first time I had delivered the training to such a mixed group and it was great to see parents learning alongside staff’.  Geraldine went on to congratulate Blackburn with Darwen for this approach: ‘It was really refreshing to see’.
