We are a Roman Catholic primary school situated on the edge of Blackburn town centre.

The school sits in large grounds with four separate playgrounds and has recently undergone extensive renovation and redecoration.

It has seven spacious classrooms and a large EYFS classroom with an additional outdoor play space, which chldren can access from the first term after their third birthday.

The maximum number for each class is 30 and each class has teaching assistants working alongside the class teacher to support and extend pupils in their learning.

The school has close links with the parish and parents and the local community are encouraged to come into school to class assemblies, masses and regular fundraising events.

Whilst the school has a strong catholic ethos we also welcome children from other faiths and cultures. We are proud of our diversity and the opportunity to work together in an ethos of tolerance and mutual respect.

The school actively promotes an inclusive education and provides a high level of support for children with a range of special educational needs.

Our school building and three out of four playgrounds are all accessible, some via ramp/sloped access, one indoor lift and one outdoor lift to one of the playgrounds which is at a higher level. There is one dedicated disabled parking bay and two specialist toilets. Specialist advice/training can be accessed with a referral to SEND Support Services as and when appropriate.

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

We work closely with and have access to the following agencies to support your child's needs as appropriate: an experienced Senco,  speech and language therapy services, occupational therapy services, physiotherapy services, school nurse and community paediatricians, advisory teachers within SEND Support Services, educational psychology team, Blackburn wth Darwen Children's Services , Child and Adult Mental Health Services.   

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

An extensive programme of  training and development is available in school for all teaching and support staff, co-ordinated by the Senco in consultation with other relevant support agencies. All staff have undertaken training in relation to safeguarding, disability awareness and positive behaviour management. Some staff have specialist training in speech, language and communication difficulties, dyslexic-type learning needs, supporting children with autism and nurture provision, as support for children with these additional needs is central to the teaching assistant  role in school.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

At St Alban's we know that pupils need additional help if concerns are raised by a parent, pupil or class teacher, if limited progress is being made or if there is a significant change in the pupil's behaviour. Discussions and/or observations involving  staff and parents may be followed up by specific assessments carried out by the Senco to accurately identify needs and plan appropriate provision for individual children. If required, and with parental consent, school can also request more specialised assessments from the advisory teachers at SEND Support Services or from the school's Educational Psychologist

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

If you have concerns about your child, you can come and discuss them with your child's class teacher, our Senco Mrs Boardman or the Headteacher Mrs Speakman.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

We are committed to giving your child every opportunity to achieve. We do this by offering a broad and balanced curriculum that is differentiated by the class teacher to support the specific needs of your child. Your child will be given a termly individual education  plan which will detail how the curriculum will be tailored and the support, adaptations and aids will be provided. We are a fully inclusive school that takes all reasonable action to ensure that your child can access all learning opportunities, including after-school activities for your child's year group where appropriate.

What specialist services and expertise are avaliable at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

At St Alban's we aim to provide a learning  environment and a broad and balanced curriculum which are flexble enough to meet the needs of all members of our school community. In addition to the high levels of experience and expertise within our school staff, we can also request the involvement of specialist staff working within the local authority to seek specialist advice and strategies specific to your child's individual needs. This advice can be implemented within school, and supported at home, to enable your child to make the best possible progress.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

Dependant on the age and ability of each child, teaching in the classroom can be adapted to promote development and support progress. This may include additional support from an adult in a small group or individually, differentiated tasks and learning activities, alternative ways of recording learning, delivery of specific programmes aimed at targetting specific needs or use of an alternative set of expectations [ usually from a previous year group, due to levels of attainment ].

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

Class teachers are responsible for tracking the progress of all children in their class, including evaluating the impact of interventions and SEND provisions. Each child with special educational needs  has their own termly learning targets specified on individual education plans which are distributed and shared with parents. In addition, the Senco also monitors the progress of children with special educational needs to evaluate the impact of provisions and support. Assessment information is analysed by staff, headteacher and governors, with a named governor for SEND who meets at least termly with the Senco. Our school policy also provides for parents to meet with class teachers twice per year and to receive a written report for their child. In addition, review meetings are arranged by the Senco for those with higher levels of need or continuing concerns. Parents or staff may also request additional appointments to discuss progress, to raise concerns or to share relevant information.

How accessible is the setting/school/college enviroment?

We actively encourage you as a parent to be involved with your child's learning. The class teacher may suggest ways of how you can support your child alongside homework activities and parents are invited via newsletters and individual letters to workshops or meetings throughout the year which are organised for specific year groups. If another professional has been involved with your child, they may also provide programmes of study or offer advice and suggestions for your continuing support at home.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

The well-being of all children is central to the ethos of our school. Our proactive aproach to dealing with any concerns or issues that your child is facing enables us to provide a safe, happy and caring environment. Class teachers may be contacted and appointments made with them if you have any concerns, to enable us to provide the right help and support for both you and your child. Mrs Boardman and Mrs Speakman may also be contacted to discuss concerns if parents feel that this would be more appropriate. We have two Emotional Literacy Support Assistants who give children regular opportunities to raise concerns or share successes and also work with small groups or individual children to address emotional well-being. If your child has a medical need, any care plans required will be prepared in consultation with you, the school nurse, a member of school staff and the appropriate medical practitioners. Many of our school staff have up-to-date training in first aid.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

All children are included in all physical activities, extra-curricular activties and school trips appropriate to their year group. If any children require additional support or relevant professional advice for staff regarding their additional needs, this will be organised by school prior to the activity or trip to ensure that everyone can take part. Teaching assistants are also deployed to support any children requiring additional or alternative support during break and meal times.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

When joining our school, or moving up to the next class, an age-appropriate planned programme of induction is agreed between parents, the class teacher and a senior member of staff. This may include home visits, classroom visits prior to admission/transition and attendance at appropriate review or transition meetings of all adults involved. When transferring to another school, we will ensure that all relevant information about your child's needs is discussed at a transition review meeting with a representative from the new school, and all appropriate records forwarded to the new school.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

We have a budget for SEN which is allocated each financial year. This money is used to provide any additional support or resources to meet a child's needs, as identified in individual education plans or EHC plans.
