Educational Psychology Team
The educational psychology team brings psychological knowledge, methods and tools to improve the development and wellbeing of children and young people.
We have a statutory role for the Council in assessing children’s special educational needs and in supporting school improvement for maintained schools.
By statutory, we mean that this service is a legal requirement.
- Statutory work is provided to Blackburn with Darwen's educational settings: schools, post 16 and early years.
- We also support the Statutory Assessment Team when considering whether a child or young person's needs are likely to require an Education, Health and Care plan.
We are also able to provide a wide range of traded services where psychology would be useful:
- staff training
- therapuetic work with children and young people
- work with parents

The team is based at 10 Duke Street, but educational psychologists work wherever children, young people and families are; this could be in schools, early years settings, colleges, homes or elsewhere.
We work in schools in the Borough and we provide statutory assessment for children who live within Blackburn with Darwen, even if they are educated elsewhere.

Statutory work is usually requested by the school or setting so this is free of charge.
Parents, young people and other professionals can also request statutory assessment of special educational needs (SEN) by contacting the SEN team, who may then ask for educational psychology involvement.
- Other notes
We provide psychological assessment for any child or young person aged 0 - 25 years who has complex needs likely to meet the criteria for an Education, Health and Care plan. In addition, we are asked to work in a variety of ways, for example providing therapeutic work, staff training and and support.
