Youth Justice logo Local Offer

Blackburn with Darwen Youth Justice Service works mainly with children and young people aged 10 -17 years old.

Some Court Orders require the YJS to supervise young people after they have reached their eighteenth birthday.

We work with young people given statutory Court Orders and with children and young people at a pre court stage to prevent them entering the criminal justice system.

We work with partner services, including the Liaison and Diversion Service: https://www.lancashirecare.nhs.uk/liaison-and-diversion-service .

Description

Blackburn and Darwen Area Partnership has been recognised for its success in securing better outcomes for children and young people with special educational needs in the youth justice system.

In June 2018 the Youth Justice Service (YJS) alongside partners from the SEND team, education, New Directions, and ELCAS met with Achievement for All moderator, Marius Frank, to see if Blackburn with Darwen’s YJS met the criteria for the SEND Quality Mark.

The SEND Quality Mark measures the Service against 10 key statements to give a ‘picture’ of our strengths and development needs.  We were rated on a scale of 0 to 10: where 0 indicates inappropriate /inapplicable to our setting and 10 indicates case studies of outstanding practice to share.

We scored 7 or higher in all 10 key statements.

We were very pleased to find that, with additional evidence and training, we were well on-track to receive the SEND Quality Lead Award: that our Service displays widespread effective practice with evidence of better outcomes for young people.

Following further work, we met again on 15 January 2019 with Marius.  He was most impressed with our evidence and rated us in the top 5 of the 35 YOTs who have achieved this Award to date: ‘ Congratulations to yourself and your team for achieving Youth Justice SEND Quality Lead status. It is a significant achievement, and richly deserved. Your submission was comprehensive and evidenced based- one of the strongest yet!”
