Specialist toys available for disabled children Newlife the Charity for Disabled Children has a Play Therapy Pod loan service which is completely free and widely accessible to families with disabled children. The Play Therapy Pods are essentially a box of carefully selected specialist toys that are loaned to families on a 12-week basis. Each pod has around £400 worth of toys suitable to stimulate physical and cognitive development, while supporting psychosocial needs with the family. There are four different development age groups to choose from: birth to 18 months; 18 months to three years; three to five years and five to eighteen years. From three years and upwards, the pods are split into sensory categories depending on a child’s individual needs. There is no limit to how many times a family can apply, so they have a chance to try the different categories and apply for the different age groups as their child’s needs change through improvement or deterioration.
