St Bede's is a Roman Catholic High school with 1000+ pupils aged 11-16 on roll.  The pupils are set according to ability and attainment with 8 sets, Upper 1-5, Middle 1-3 and a Foundation school.  The Foundation school has a year 7 base, a year 8/9 base and a 10/11 base.  All pupils follow all National Curriculum subjects in year 7, 8 and 9, selecting Options at the end of year 9 to study at GCSE or equivalent.

The buildings are newly refurbished and meet DDA requirements with lifts in both buildings and/or ramp access. Therapy rooms are available with hoist and shower facilities.  St Bede's is very successful in many areas of sport including table tennis, football and badminton and BOCCIA.

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

The SENCO has a Post Graduate Diploma SEN/Inclusion (Open Prov) which incorporates SENCO standards.

All teaching staff and SSAs have up to date training in ASD and Dyslexia.  They incorporate this training in their teaching practices.  Several staff are trained Fire Marshalls, several are First Aid trained including Defibulator training. 

Annual training on Diabetes, use of Epipens and Asthma care and support are provided by specialist staff from Blackburn with Darwen Health Authority.  Health Care plans are drawn up and followed by individuals.

There are 27 SSAs with different areas of expertise including Fine and Gross motor skills, Visual Impairement, Dyslexia,  Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Speech and Language.  One is competent in Braille to level 2.  Four have specialist Autistic Spectrum Disorder training and qualifications.  All are qualified in Safer People Handling, reviewed and updated annually.

Two SEN staff have ELKLAN accreditation.  Safeguarding training including Safety in Education plus PREVENT training is up to date and accredited for all staff.

Regular online courses are undertaken during our weekly training, the most recent training has included:-

  • Introducing Hidden Dyslexia
  • Anxiety and Autism
  • Autism Awareness
  • Autism and Sensory Issues

TRANSITION TO YEAR 7

  • SENCO attends year 5 and 6 reviews for pupils transferring from primary, when invited
  • Year 7 Transition Coordinator visits every primary school to discuss the pupil's needs and attainment prior to transfer
  • An SSA is assigned to each child with allocated hours (EHCP/IPRA) and they visit the primary school to form a relationship with the child for four weeks prior to transfer
  • All pupils attend a 3 day 'taster' in July prior to transfer, their identified SSA supports within St Bede's

TRANSITION TO COLLEGE

  • At year 9 review pupils encouraged to consider career options
  • College representatives invited to year 10 and 11 reviews
